The January 2026 merit list came out on 6 March 2026. Reported general category cut-offs touched or crossed 97% in Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Some circles ran close to 100%.

North Eastern and other smaller circles stayed noticeably lower. Those are the same circles that just gained seats.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

You need a Class 10 (Secondary School Examination) pass certificate from a recognised board. You must have passing marks in both Mathematics and English.

The board must be recognised by the Government of India, a State Government or a Union Territory. An equivalent qualification from another board will not be accepted.

Local Language

You must have studied the prescribed local language up to at least Class 10. The language is fixed for each circle in Annexure-III of the notification.

This rule quietly decides which circles you can apply to. Check it before you plan anything else. Special provisions apply for Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Sikkim and Nagaland.

Age Limit and Relaxation

The age limit is 18 to 40 years, counted as on the last date of application.

Residence rules are strict. A BPM must arrange accommodation for the Branch Post Office and live in that village. An ABPM or Dak Sevak must live within the delivery area of the post office.

GDS staff are not regular central government employees. You are paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance, or TRCA.

What you actually take home

Your in-hand pay is the TRCA slab amount plus Dearness Allowance at the rate notified by the Government. The notification does not print a DA percentage, so treat Rs 12,000 and Rs 10,000 as your starting floor.

TRCA rises by 3% each year if you meet the conditions in the GDS Rules. You also get GDS Gratuity and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme.

Job Profile

• BPM: runs a single-handed Branch Post Office. Daily postal work, IPPB transactions, promoting department services, mail delivery.
• ABPM: assists the BPM. Sells stamps and stationery, carries and delivers mail, handles IPPB work. May do full BPM duties when needed.
• Dak Sevak: works in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices or Delivery Centres. Handles mail and parcels and assists the Postmaster.

Selection Process

1. Merit list. A system generates the list from your Class 10 marks, converted to a percentage up to four decimal places. There is no written exam and no interview.
2. Grade conversion. If your marksheet shows grades, marks are calculated by multiplying the grade point by 9.5. If it shows CGPA, marks are CGPA multiplied by 9.5. If both are given, the higher figure is used.
3. Tie-breaking. Older date of birth wins first. After that, a fixed category and gender order applies, starting with ST trans-woman and ST female.
4. Document verification. Shortlisted candidates report to the Divisional or Unit Head with original documents.

1. Open indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement and click “Click Here to Register/Apply”.

The rejection trap most candidates fall into: entering grades where the form asks for marks, or mixing the two. The notification states plainly that this can lead to cancellation. Copy the figures exactly as they appear on your marksheet, then check them again in the edit window on 23 and 24 September 2026.

Expert Tips Before You Apply

• Look hard at North Eastern Circle. National vacancies fell 17%, but that circle rose about 158% and it historically carries a lower cut-off than Bihar or Uttar Pradesh. If your local language qualifies you there, it is the best ratio on the board this cycle.
• Set your safe target at 95% and above. In high-competition circles last cycle, general category candidates below 95% mostly missed the first list. Between 85% and 90%, aim at smaller circles instead.
• Resize your photo and signature before you open the form. Do it once, save both files, and keep them on the device you will apply from. Resizing mid-form is where sessions time out.
• Use a mobile number and email you will keep for a year. Neither can be changed after OTR, under any circumstances. Every shortlist SMS goes to that number.
